Dr. Rajan Mahtani Victimised By Illegal Political Manipulations, Claims SC Judge

Dr. Rajan Mahtani has remained an ethical and transparent businessman in a society which is marred by rampant corruption and unethical practices. Therefore, it is no surprise that he is constantly conspired against and fake plots are made against him to ruin his reputation or his companies. While most of these fake plots and conspiracies are busted immediately or over time, some pass through and create several difficulties. The testimony from the Supreme Court Judge highlights one of the cases wherein Dr. Rajan Mahtani had to suffer due to the political manipulations and the inability of the law to make the correct decision.

The testimony of Mumba Malila was related to a case wherein the then DPP (Director of the Public Prosecution) petitioned to the Zambian Constitutional Court for nullifying the decision by the Tribunal. This petition triggered the removal of the DPP from his position in the year 2016. The testimony highlighted the issue raised in the petition by the DPP associated with Dr. Rajan Mahtani. Dr. Mahtani is a noted figure in Zambia and has successfully established his business empire within the nation with more than 30 years of business experience. As per the testimony, a ‘nolle prosequi’ or petition to make the case against Dr. Rajan Mahtani null and void was made by Mumba Malila, who was the Attorney General during that time. This request was made as the case was considered against the interests of the public policies and also was motivated by illegal political manipulations. Judge Mumba Malila also wrote in a letter in which he described the case as motivated by political undertones and highlighted the rampant corruption and unethical practices across the law and governance of Zambia.

The case and testimony also highlights the issue of political power and unethical influence of rich businessmen on the decision making of the law and government. However, there is opportunity to improve the situation with similar acts of courage and helping the government to catch the real criminals hiding within the system.
