On the special occasion of Africa Day, President of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema announced his plans to abolish the death penalty law. It is an archaic and old age law that does not have any relevancy in the present economy and social system. Noted businessman and philanthropist Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani extended his full support in this decision. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is one of the most celebrated and noted business personalities across Zambia and Africa. He has more than four decades of business experience and is known for successful and long-standing business ventures such as Mahtani Group of Companies and Finsbury Investments. In the year 2021, Dr. Rajan Mahtani was conferred with the Forbes ‘Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year’ award. Dr.Rajan Mahtani received this award for making significant contributions towards redefining the banking sector of Zambia. The award presented to Dr. Mahtani is one of the Forbes ‘Best of Africa’ awards, presented annually to leading lights in the field of business, philanthropy and leadership. The ‘Best of Africa’ awards are presented in conjunction with Forbes-FIN Philanthropy and Leadership roundtable conference Dr.Rajan Mahtani was also invited in this event as a honorary speaker, which was held online to company with the last year’s covid-19 restrictions and members participated in this event from their respective locations. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani was also recognised for his significant philanthropic contributions and charity works, including but not limited to Prison Fellowship Zambia and Stephen Malama award and Scholarship for top law graduates in Zambia.
Recently, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema announced that he is planning to completely abolish the death penalty law. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, while praising the decision from the Zambian President, stated that death penalty is cruel, degrading and inhumane. Dr.RajanLekhraj Mahtani also stated that his company Prison Fellowship Zambia will provide full legal and regulatory support towards this decision and will ensure that this decision becomes a reality soon.
