Political Manipulations And Unethical Practices Rampant In Zambia, Confirms Justice Malila

Zambia is a developing nation and the country has been facing several ups and downs. While there are few positive developments in terms of economic contributions by businesses, government support as well as improved social conditions, there are also numerous factors which are cumulatively weighing down the country’s growth and development. Among them is a frequent political manipulation which has reached even places like the courts and the national legal system. As a result, it becomes extremely difficult for those individuals and businesses who are trying to follow an ethical and honest path for business activities.

Dr. Rajan Mahtani

A similar situation was unearthed in the testimony given by Justice Mumba Malila. Justice Mumba Malila is an honorable justice from the Supreme Court of Zambia. He recently gave a testimony before the court wherein he discussed about several wrong doings and unethical practices going on within Zambia for a long time. In his testimony, he discussed about a case of 2012 related to Dr. Rajan Mahtani, a famous businessman and philanthropist in Zambia. Dr. Rajan Mahtani is a well-known face in the Zambian corporate with numerous successful businesses such as Mahtani Group of Companies, Finance Bank Zambia and Finsbury Investments. He is also known for his charitable activities. In the 2012 case, the decision making by the Tribunal was against Dr. Rajan Mahtani’s claims. However, according to the testimony by Justice Mumba Malila, the case was motivated by several political undertones. He also said that the case was against the interest of the public policies. Justice Mumba Malila was the Attorney General during that time and made several attempts to make the case null and void. However, no such action was taken and the final decision was given against him. It was clear that there were several external forces influencing the decision making.

The testimony from Justice Mumba Malila opens numerous discussions on the issue of rampant corruption. It is time the Zambian government takes notice and starts taking action.
